Cambodian flyweight Khon Sichan is determined to make a clear statement this Friday, 22 February in Singapore.
The Khmer Warrior Challenge (KWC) Champion will take on Indonesian talent Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian in an anticipated mixed martial arts bout at ONE: CALL TO GREATNESS.
Even though it has been almost a year since his last outing, Sichan feels confident in his preparation where he has trained with some of Cambodia’s top athletes and coaches.
“My preparation is done, and both my techniques and power are all set,” Khon Sichan explains.
“I’m gonna give all my best in this competition!”
Fighting out of Oddar Meanchey Province, Sichan has based most of his training camp in Phnom Penh where he has been under the wings of his long-time coach Alan Mccune.
“These days I’m training a lot of Kun Khmer,” Sichan shares.
“I’m already good at Kun Khmer, but my opponent is skilled at MMA, so right now I’m training more on how to defend myself on the ground.”
“After that, I will use my Kun Khmer skills to strike him.”
Helping him further improve his ground game is third-degree black belt Fernando Salvador, one of Southeast Asia’s most seasoned jiu-jitsu practitioners with almost three decades of experience.
To even further motivate himself, Sichan recently grew his family with the birth of a baby boy.
“I’m fighting to support my family because I now have two children and it’s our only source of income,” Khon Sichan states.
“My wife always supports and encourages me to keep fighting.”
Sichan’s opponent, “The Golden Boy” Agustian is currently riding a two-bout win-streak and is yet to taste defeat in ONE Championship, but the KWC Flyweight Champion is not unnerved by the Indonesian.
Instead, he welcomes the challenge and views it as a great way to show the power of Kun Khmer.
“I have a lot of fight experience; but [Agustian] is definitely a strong and challenging opponent,” Sichan states.
“But I don’t feel worried or scared; I will just go into the ring and show what I’ve got!”
Sichan and Agustian’s flyweight clash will kick off the evening’s main card and will be the first of two bouts where Cambodia will be represented, as Kingdom Fight Gym’s Kong Sambo will later make his ONE Championship debut in a Super Series Kickboxing bout.
With only days left for the action-packed card, Sichan has only one request from his fellow Cambodians.
“All fans who support our sport, please don’t mock or criticize our fighters,” Khon Sichan asks.
“It’s normal to win or lose in competition. Instead, send some encouraging words for me!“
